Look Deeper, Stay Longer. On the art of long-term documentary

During this meeting, we will talk about how women work on photographic projects over an extended period of time – how they combine intuition with consistency, how they build relationships based on trust, and what it means to tell stories with attentiveness and tenderness. We will start from the basics: how to prepare for a project, how to choose a subject that truly moves us, and how not to lose ourselves along the way.

We will discuss the challenges faced in long-term work – both emotional and practical – and ways to navigate them. We will also talk about equipment: not from a technical standpoint, but in terms of what supports our storytelling. We will consider how to secure funding for projects and how to build support networks – both financial and emotional.

An important theme will also be the relationship with our protagonists: how to ensure the safety of both sides, how to work with closeness, silence, and consent. Finally, we will look into participating in photography competitions – both as entrants and as jurors – and talk about how to make our voices more distinct in the photographic space without giving up sensitivity and authenticity.

This will be a time for sharing experiences, asking questions, exchanging doubts – in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

Karolina Jonderko (b. 1985, Rydułtowy)

Daughter of a miner and a music teacher. Member of the Napo Images Agency. Fujifilm Ambassador. Graduate of Photography at the Cinematography Department of the Łódź Film School. Recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including World Press Photo 2021 and the Magnum & IdeasTap Award, which enabled her to intern at the Magnum Photos agency in New York. Her photographic work focuses on long-term projects, most of which explore the phenomenon of loss and its consequences – themes found in the series Self-portrait with My Mother, Lost, Reborn, and Little Poland. Starting from her own experiences, the author expands the perspective to include other people struggling with the loss of loved ones, places, or identity. In her work, she places great emphasis on building a personal bond with her subjects.
