Primitive cameras I build, stripped of control over framing or focus, offer images far removed from what we can normally see. When combined into multi-lens modules, they can create images that serve as the basis for short animations. To bring such a still image to life, you only need a twin-lens camera that can be shifted, or you can change the arrangement of the photographed objects. More complex sequences can be created using a dozen or more lenses or cameras, multiple exposures, and long exposures – enabling you to see extraordinary time–space passages, multidimensional structures of objects frozen in motion, and stereoscopic effects.

The workshop is inspired by my PIN-ANIMA project, presented at several photography festivals. This project is a series of experiments following in the footsteps of 19th-century pioneers of chronophotography, such as Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey – both of whom built cameras to study human motion and produced static photographs, yet their experiments already hinted at the future invention of cinema.

I would like to invite you to join in hands-on experimentation in the spirit of DIY. Simplicity will be the foundation of our work – the cameras we will use are simple boxes, suitcases, or tins fitted with pinhole or lens optics, with black-and-white photographic paper as the light-sensitive material. These constructions will serve us to create photographs, which we will then transform into simple films and stereoscopic views. We will be building, exposing, developing, digitising, and creating digital animations – all while having a great time.

Paweł Kula

Visual artist and experimenter. Works with unconventional light-sensitive materials such as plants and phosphorescent pigments, practices camera-less photography, and constructs primitive cameras and optical toys. Co-creator of the idea and method of solarigraphy (2000).

He conducts workshops inspired by the language of visual arts, the history of photography, psychogeography, and DIY practices. Graduated in photography from the University of the Arts Poznań (2004) and is currently a doctoral candidate there (2023). Lecturer at the Photography Department of the Academy of Art in Szczecin and member of the Polish Amateur Astronomers Society.

An enthusiast of houseplants, gardening, winter swimming, and family life.
