The Jacobi Family – Pioneers of Photography in Toruń

The District Museum in Toruń has prepared an exhibition about the Jacobi family. Its members very quickly, almost immediately after the invention of photography, established a studio in Toruń, which became the beginning of later branches – not only in our city. Each successive generation gathered its own visionaries and contributed both an artistic and an economic touch. Thanks to the work of the Jacobi family, Toruń has been left with numerous photographs of the city, but above all, with a vast collection of portraits of people over the years, presenting the social context of Toruń. The Jacobi legacy is preserved in the collections of our Museum, as well as in most cultural institutions in Toruń, whose exhibits will also be included in the exhibition. The entire arrangement will be presented in an unconventional and innovative manner – in the true spirit of the Jacobi family. We will attempt to recreate the oldest studio with its complete photographic facilities and the working methods of the pioneer photographers.
